Project Overview: Meta Hyperscale Data Center, Kentucky
Projects: Electrical Skid Integration Support
Challenge
Phase 1 of a 620-acre hyperscale campus for Meta required the integration of 85 prefabricated electrical switchgear skids within extremely tight installation tolerances.
Under Turner Construction, precise skid placement, accurate slab set points, and exact bus duct alignment were critical. The overhead bus duct sections connecting adjacent skids required the units to be level, plumb, and horizontally aligned to avoid feeder adjustments, material waste, and schedule impacts.
The project included:
- 42 DES Skids (RIN1)
- 42 DES Skids (RIN2)
- 1 Admin Electrical Room Skid
With insertion dates staggered across multiple data halls, layout accuracy and field verification were essential to maintain installation tolerances and prevent costly rework.
Solution
New Technology Group was hired by United Electric to support their skid integration scope through precision field scanning and layout verification.
Using a Trimble point scanner, NTG captured existing field conditions and assisted United Electric in establishing precise skid location markings on the floor, aligning with the integration requirements outlined in the scope.
Key support activities included:
- Establishing and verifying set points for 50+ electrical equipment skids
- Confirming alignment prior to anchoring and overhead bus duct installation
- Supporting field tolerance verification to maintain tight busway connections
- Providing limited, field-driven coordination support to assist United Electric’s on-site team
NTG’s involvement in BIM was minimal and supplemental, focused primarily on layout verification and installation clarity rather than full-scope coordination management.
The priority was practical field accuracy to protect material budgets and maintain schedule integrity.
