Challenge
The Microsoft Data Center project in Virginia was a highly complex, mission-critical facility requiring precise BIM coordination, detailed cable tray design, and close collaboration among multiple trades.
The project demanded advanced Revizto coordination and LOD 400 Revit modeling to support construction-level installation, ensuring accurate routing, clearances, and field-ready documentation.
At the time, ComNet’s internal team was focused primarily on CAD production and early-stage modeling. While initial Revit models were successfully developed, the project’s scale and technical demands required additional specialized BIM and coordination support.
To meet these requirements, ComNet engaged NTG to provide experienced BIM leadership, advanced Revizto coordination, and LOD 400 modeling support.
Solution
NTG established project-specific coordination processes and governance structures to stabilize and correct the project.
The team conducted a comprehensive review of existing Revit models and Revizto configurations, identifying modeling inconsistencies, coordination gaps, and workflow misalignments. Based on these findings, NTG developed a detailed corrective action plan.
All coordination efforts were aligned with Weitz Construction’s BIM standards to ensure consistency with general contractor requirements.
Within weeks, NTG restructured Revizto, standardized model content, and implemented disciplined review processes, creating a stable and predictable coordination environment.
NTG’s scope included:
- Evaluating and correcting Revit models
- Auditing and restructuring Revizto workflows
- Developing a corrective coordination plan
- Aligning processes with GC BIM standards
- Representing ComNet in three weekly coordination meetings
- Supporting LOD 400 cable tray and cabinet modeling
- Clearing clashes within ComNet’s scope
- Managing Revizto issue tracking and reporting
These actions allowed ComNet to regain control of project coordination and refocus on execution.
Process
NTG applied a structured, repeatable workflow based on internal best practices and GC-aligned standards.
Initial Evaluation & Planning
- Verified model accuracy and completeness
- Reviewed issue-tracking procedures
- Assessed naming conventions and standards
- Evaluated clash resolution workflows
Findings were documented and used to develop a recovery and improvement plan.
Revit Modeling (LOD 400)
NTG developed LOD 400 models under ComNet’s project leadership, detailing cable tray routing, elevations, and clearances to meet installation and coordination requirements.
All modeling aligned with ComNet workflows and GC guidelines.
Coordination – Navisworks & Revizto
Trade models were integrated for clash detection and issue management. NTG led coordination efforts and represented ComNet in three weekly BIM meetings.
Quality Control
Internal back-checking procedures verified model accuracy, clash resolution, and documentation prior to release.
Results
Schedule Recovery
Structured planning and corrective actions stabilized ComNet’s scope and restored project momentum.
Clash Reduction
Improved standards and disciplined coordination significantly reduced conflicts and rework.
Improved Constructability
LOD 400 models delivered accurate, field-ready layouts, improving productivity and reducing RFIs.
Centralized Collaboration
Standardized workflows improved communication between ComNet, the GC, and all trades.
Construction & As-Builts
Validated models produced reliable construction drawings and final as-built documentation.
- Project Impact
- Standardized Revit and Revizto environments
- Improved GC compliance
- Reduced coordination risk
- Increased field efficiency
- Strengthened NTG–ComNet partnership
Conclusion
Through structured governance, comprehensive evaluation, and alignment with Weitz Construction’s coordination standards, NTG helped ComNet successfully deliver a complex Microsoft Data Center project in Virginia.
NTG’s ability to diagnose challenges, implement corrective strategies, and provide consistent coordination leadership transformed the project into a stable, well-managed operation.
